This quart jar with a ring and screen comes with powdered sugar and instructions to easily and reliably perform sugar rolls to determine mite load.
Simple instructions:
1. Fill about 1 inch of the bottom of the jar with live bees
2. Dump in just enough powdered sugar to coat all the bees well.
3. Screw on the lid with screen.
4. Shake well with your hand over the screen to make sure all the bees are well sugared.
5. On a white surface, such as your hive lid, shake the sugar through the screen. The mites will detach from the bees and fall through the screen onto your white surface.
6. Count the number of mites and divide that number by 3, figuring you had about 300 bees in your jar, to figure your mite load per 100 bees.
