Though designed for the migratory, commercial beekeeper, this lid can be used for anyone.
The main panel of this lid is made of high quality exterior plywood, reducing chances of rot and moisturization. The end cleats fasten these together in a 1/4″ deep groove with 1 5/8″ for a skirt and 3/8″ above. Another piece fastens flat-wise to the top. This piece also has a 3/8″ thick lip to come out over the skirt pieces. This eliminates the crack that would allow water into the ends of the panel.
After these lids have been carefully assembled with staples, they are wax dipped. By being boiled in hot wax, moisture is forced out of the wood and wax is forced in.
Wax dipped hive components are known to last for 20 years or more with zero maintenance, and NO NEED to reapply wax later. Wax dipped hives CANNOT be painted, but instead preserves the beautiful, natural wood appearance. The wood color will steadily darken over time from exposure to the sun, but it won’t rot or deteriorate!
